It’s time to gear up for the sixth 4x4 Challenge for Charity, which will take place On October 2nd and 3rd, 2010. It’s a driving and navigational event with offroad sections and it’s open to teams of two in 4x4 vehicles. Teams consist of one driver and one navigator: no other person will be allowed to travel in the vehicle during the event – this helps to maximise sleeping space in the vehicle!!
Working from Ordnance Survey Discovery Series maps and a road book, teams will navigate their way over varied landscapes to find hidden clues and complete tasks set by the devious organisers. Digital cameras are needed to photograph specific items along the route. A full list of equipment will be provided in the entry pack to be sent out before the event. The event is open to any 4x4 capable of being driven offroad (well, maybe not a Fiat Panda) and that is in good roadworthy condition. The starting point is cloaked in secrecy, only to be announced shortly before the event. It will finish at a luxury hotel on the Sunday night where the winners are announced at a prizegiving dinner – the Irish 4x4 Oscars. And if this sounds soft, don’t worry, you’ll think that you’ve earned it by the time you get there.
If you want to enter, print off the entry form from the website and send it in together with the entry fee. Entries will not be accepted without payment. The basic entry fee of €200 per team will cover some of the expenses and is non-refundable. We hope that the entry fee will include the cost of maps. Entrants will just need a good road atlas. In addition to the entry fee, teams are asked to raise a minimum of €500 in sponsorship and there will be an award for the highest amount of sponsorship raised. Once you sign up for the event, resources are available to help you with ideas on how to raise sponsorship and publicise your involvement.
Entry fees must be paid when returning the entry form. The fee covers operating expenses and includes a hotel room, dinner and bed and breakfast for Sunday night. Any further personal expenses, including additional food and any drinks will be at your own expense. Any surplus in the entry fee will be added to the sponsorship fund: every euro raised from the 4x4 Challenge for Charity goes to Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin.
